The Trichologist around the world.
(Explaining the role of The Society's properly trained graduate Trichologists)
Trichology is a little understood but often maligned profession. For 100 +years it has been considered as a sort of adjunct to hairdressing services.
The Society has evidence to confirm that the majority of so called 'trichologists' are or were hairdressers who have undergone an expensive course of study so abysmally basic as to be of almost nil value.
The Society wishes to emphasise that its trichologists ARE NOT HAIRDRESSERS.
One course in Australia is we are informed delivered to hairdressers in just 2 hours (two hours) and is rewarded with a certificate referring to the recipient as a 'Trichologist'.
Another course in Korea lasts just 36 hours. Equally ludicrous in our opinion.
These courses are a travesty as they denigrate the perception of trichology as a worthy caring profession.
What can anyone learn about a medical subject in two hours? Would any sensible person knowingly want to consult such an 'expert'
The well trained clinical trichologist will be an intelligent well educated individual who has also studied 2-4 years to gain his/her Diploma in Pure-Trichology from The Trichological Society.
The para-medical/scientific discipline of pure trichology is a much mis-understood area of health care. As the profession of the trichologist is not protected by law, anyone can claim to be one (this is also true of other professions e.g. accountancy).
Since 1902 (when the profession became established) Trichology has primarily but not exclusively attracted hairdressers and the profession has become labeled as part of that craft. The Trichological Society's graduate trichologists are not hairdressers. Of its current student intake 94% hold first degrees in science subjects. They receive training in anatomy, physiology and the aetiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management of the many scalp and hair disorders/diseases. They provide advice with recommendations as to treatments where applicable. They refer patients to other professionals where appropriate.
They are respected by the legal profession and provide academic/scientific reports and in-court testimony as expert witnesses in both civil and criminal cases.
The Society's graduate trichologists are frequently the choice of journalists, the media, the legal profession, and industry etc where reliable trichological opinion is sought.
In all aspects TTS trichologists are required to act with the best interests of the patient as their priority.
TTS Registered Trichologists are required to obey a Code of Ethics and Professional Practice Guidelines. The Society is intolerant of any malpractice/overcharging/charlatanism and will act rigorously in any area of legitimate complaint against its registered practitioner members. In any such instance the Registrar should be informed without delay.
The Society's Open University style course is set at the highest academic standard within this discipline worldwide - its graduands have no connection with hairdressing. The 2-5 year academic course includes the study of the following:
