Plica Polonica
(syn. Plica Neuropathica)
Plica Polonica (syn. Plica Neuropathica) - an uncommon condition in which groups of hair-shafts become irreversibly entangled, forming a matted and sometimes sticky moist mass. Symptoms may also include an inflamed scalp with bad odour. It was first described in Poland during the 19th century.
It has been suggested that Plica Polonica may be associated with damage to sections of the cuticle thereby exposing the moist sticky cortex to which other similarly effected hairshafts adhere.
Predisposing factors may sometimes include:
i) Hair with natural kinks.
ii) Shampoos used.
iii) Water quality.
iv) Deficient hair care.
The condition may follow an acute infestation with pediculus capitis.
Treatment:
Treatment usually involves cutting the effected hair - Sorry !
