D P A  (Diffuse Patterned Alopecia)

D U P A (Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia)

Whereas in many who suffer androgen related alopecias, the advancement accedes to the Norwood-Hamilton scale other forms of the alopecia may introduce confusion as to the validity of transplanting techniques.

Diffuse Patterned Alopecia (androgenetic) - presents as a diffuse often inexorable follicle miniaturisation process causing hair density reduction at the Anterior, Central and Posterior Vertices which does not equate with the established Norwood-Hamilton classification. The Occipital Region however is usually unaffected and therefore serves as a donor site from which donor follicles may be harvested for transplantation.

Diffuse Un-patterned Alopecia (androgenic) also presents as a miniaturisation and eventual loss of hair-bearing follicles over the entire scalp including the occipital region which renders the subject unsuitable for hair transplantation procedures.

Correct differential diagnosis is therefore essential.
